To prevent boats sinking in the Boat Race
It was the 154th Oxford and Cambridge University Boat Race today on the River Thames in London - Oxford won. But here's a 1901 Punch cartoon suggesting how the latest marine technology might alter how the Boat Race could be run in the future (Oxford is nearest the viewer). There have been eight occasions when enough water entered the boats to cause one of the crew to sink in the past, but no one has yet suggested submerging the teams fully. The guys in the front of the submarines are the Coxs who direct the teams. Note the policeman wearing his helmet even under water!
